Description Mike 2016-08-12 17:16:03 UTC
Description of problem:

To see a message in NetworkManager, the same error that is seen in resolv.conf when more than 3 DNS servers are being used for a network connection.

EXAMPLE: in /etc/resolv.conf, I see the following message:

# NOTE: the libc resolver may not support more than 3 nameservers.
# The nameservers listed below may not be recognized.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Name : NetworkManager
Epoch : 1
Version : 1.2.2
Release : 2.fc24
Architecture: x86_64

How reproducible:

Everytime

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure Network - Enter more than 3 DNS servers.

Actual results:
Nothing

Expected results:
It would be nice to still allow me to enter more than 3 DNS servers, but getting a notice/warning message about having more than 3.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 26 development cycle.
Changing version to '26'.

the limitation of 3 DNS servers depends on the resolver, not NetworkManager. E.g. when using a DNS plugin like dns=dnsmasq or dns=systemd-resolved, the limitation does not apply.

As you see, NM allows you obviously to add more then 3 DNS servers, and there is a warning in /etc/resolv.conf.

I can only imagine you are talking about a warning in nm-connection-editor when you configure there more then 3 DNS servers. But DNS servers can be added from DHCP and statically. E.g. when configuring 2 static DNS servers with ipv4.method=auto and ipv4.ignore-auto-dns=no it can easily happen at runtime that you end up with 4 DNS servers, but nm-connection-editor is not aware of that.
Likewise, when you activate multiple connections, the DNS servers get merged. nm-connection-editor cannot know which connections will be active at runtime (and whether the number of DNS servers will exceed 3, or whether that is a problem at all). In short, nm-c-e cannot warn you at the moment when you edit one connection profile.

Or do you want to see a popup in nm-applet telling you that now more then 3 DNS servers are active? Reporting warnings to users via a UI notification is problematic.
E.g. there could be multiple clients running (gnome-shell and nm-applet). Which one should show the warning? Is the warning even relevant to be shown in the UI (I don't think so).
