1. Feature Id:	[200824]
Feature Name:	Include a watchdog daemon.
Sponsor:	xSeries
Category:	xSeries
Request Type:	Other

2. Short Description
We have evaluated some open source watchdog daemons for possible use with the OpenIPMI watchdog
driver and BMC watchdog timer and have found two that are suitable and will meet IBM's needs to
replace its current support of the proprietary ASR utility for Linux. Although each of these open
source daemons can be used as a software watchdog, each can also be configured to use the
/dev/watchdog device instead and therefore can be used with openipmi as hardware watchdog daemons.
The first daemon (wd_keepalive) is a simple keepalive watchdog timer daemon and, coupled with the
ipmi watchdog driver's ability to allow the configurable parameters to be set when the watchdog
driver is loaded, gives us enough functionality to replace our current ASR utility. The second
daemon (watchdog) is a highly functional software watchdog daemon but it can also be used as a
hardware watchdog daemon instead. Furthermore, having a software daemon resident in the distribution
would be beneficial for those who don't have BMCs available in their hardware. Both daemons reside
in the same source package, so it might be easiest to include both. The package can be found at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/daemons/watchdog/

3. Business Case
Provide a watchdog daemon in the distribution, eliminating complicated installation (required by
download and setup/compile of an 'out-of-distro' tool), thereby improving customer satisfaction.

This feature does not meet the content definition for RHEL 4.8 in that no new
packages are going to be added to this release.
